The Active 4 Life project:
Funded by Sports England, the project has recently begun and is offering free access to physical activities, including walking football, yoga, football, circuit training, table tennis, mentoring and more! Its aim is to support people to get more physically active, and improve their health and wellbeing.
The services are now available for anyone in hostel accommodation, supported housing, winter night shelters, sleeping rough or sofa-surfing, and those accessing foodbanks in the London Borough of Newham.
A survey carried out in 2018 showed that 82% of people in those groups would like to be more physically active, but that key barriers included cost (including travel), lack of motivation and poor health. When asked what would encourage them to take part in more physical activity and the top three answers were free sessions (55%), activities in local community venues (29%) and a mentor to support or encourage me (29%).
Participants of the focus group identified “having purpose and structure to their daily life” as being a very important component of improving their health and wellbeing. They also identified a clear association between their levels of physical activity and their chances of obtaining housing and/or employment.
And so the Active 4 Life project was born! It aims to encourage a sense of purpose and community, with an outward focus on personal development and achievement.
The free activities are now taking place every week at Caritas Anchor House and Bobby Moore Pavilion. You can see the timetable of activities below – they are all free and do not require registration.
