NEWHAM TALKS WITH KANO

We are thrilled to announce that Your Place will be one of three local charities benefiting from a fantastic initiative being championed by rapper and actor Kano.

Best known as a pioneer for grime music, Kano has recorded a series of conversations with well-known faces in the worlds of music, entertainment, sport, food, and literature. Guests will be discussing political, cultural and societal issues affecting the borough of Newham, where they all grew up.

The episodes are free to watch but viewers are encouraged to make a voluntary donation to local causes via a Gofundme campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/f/newhamtalks. Funds will go directly to The Renewal Programme, which will then be split with Your Place and Bonny Downs Community Association – all three being vital Newham charities.

The first episode, featuring British Grime artist Ghetts can be found on Kano’s Youtube channel here (and in the left sidebar on this page). The pair discuss their influences when it comes to music alongside issues such as segregation in the borough of Newham. The remaining eight episodes will feature D Double E, Footsie, Posty (owner of GRM Daily), Olympic World and Commonwealth 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu, actor Idris Elba OBE, researcher and author Joy White, vegan chef and restaurant owner King Cook, and ex-footballer and Brighton and Hove former manager Chris Hughton. The episodes will be released every Friday and Monday through September here.

Speaking about the project, Kano explained, “Growing up in Newham made me the artist and the man that I am today. Newham is one of the most culturally rich but economically one of the poorest boroughs in London and as the effects of COVID-19 continue to hit the community hard, we must come together and do what we can to help.

“With other Newham-raised artists and cultural pioneers, I’ve started a conversation — through Newham Talks, we aim to raise both awareness and funds to support this brilliant community, that has supported so many of us.”
