Cristina’s Story

"I don’t look back at my past because I know I can’t change it. I look into the future now, and I feel happy. "
My story was not a nice one, but it’s better now.
I used to live with a partner, but I drank a lot, so much that he left me. I really struggled with alcohol, and I put it before everything. Drinking helped me block out things that I didn’t want to remember.
I ended up homeless, and I slept in a park. I drank a lot there. I was scared, but alcohol made me feel safer.
I got some help and moved into temporary accommodation, and then I moved to Your Place a year ago.

"I was supported to do a detox programme, and I’m proud to be sober now. "
It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve had support from the team here and other services.
I don’t drink at all now. I don’t go near it. When I used to drink, I would feel good for a moment, but awful the next day. I feel very good now, very happy.
I have started going back to church services, and it’s very nice to be back in a congregation surrounded by people. It’s helping me so much.
My room here is nice; I feel safe, and I’ve liked getting to know people. The support workers here are helpful. They put on activities. They help me when I need it and are always making sure that I’m okay.
My keyworker is great, she has helped me get interviews for college courses and has helped me think about my goals.
I don’t look back at my past because I know I can’t change it. I look into the future now, and I feel happy.
