Isadora’s* story

"Everyone knows each other and talks to you, which makes such a big difference when you’ve been through something really difficult."

Isadora is not our resident’s real name. She has asked to remain anonymous to protect her privacy.

I am a survivor of domestic abuse, and when things like that happen, you walk out the door and you might find you have nothing. This is one part of my story before I came to Your Place, but it doesn’t define me.

When I could finally leave that relationship, I found myself homeless, and I am still waiting for the outcome of my application to remain in the UK. Both things happening at once was really overwhelming. I’m originally from Brazil but I’m building my life here, and I want to stay. Before the challenges that I faced in my last relationship, I was working in healthcare and doing a nutrition apprenticeship, and I really want to get back into that line of work.

When I came to Your Place, I was so surprised at how well I was treated. They really pay attention to you, and they care about your needs. I felt so supported, and all the key workers brought something to my experience, and were really encouraging.

I always say that every key worker is my key worker; everyone knows each other and talks to you, which makes such a big difference when you’ve been through something really difficult. The freedom to cook for myself in the shared kitchen and to get to know new people and new cultures makes it feel like a community here.

I was really keen to get back into work, and my key worker helped me to understand the skills I had, and boost my confidence. Thanks to her help, I applied to do some interpreting work for Spanish speakers who are also going through the immigration system. I did lots of interview practice and went through techniques with the job coach and resident engagement workers at Your Place, and I was so happy when I got the job. It feels like a big step in the right direction.

I love learning and want to go to university when my status is confirmed; I’d like to study law or psychology. I feel that I can keep improving myself; with so many people encouraging you to do your best, you feel like anything is possible.
