Naz’s story

"Now I feel hope. Now I’m strong. And I have Your Place to thank for it."
When I got divorced in 2014, I lost everything and had nowhere to go. I ended up in a house share, but it turned out the landlord had illegally sublet the property, so I had to leave.
A charity helped me find accommodation, and from there, I found the confidence to apply for a job. I struggle with reading and writing, so I got help at the library and was so happy to get a role in security.
I’ve now worked in all kinds of venues, but I loved working in VIP suites at the Oval, Wembley, and Royal Ascot the most. I’ve met David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and even royalty. I was even meant to have champagne with the late Queen. Thanks to my personality, I done really well, moved into customer service and was often requested by VIP clients for special events.
I’ve recently been diagnosed with autism, which explained why I’ve always struggled to feel like I fit in. In my culture, without being seen as ‘successful’, I’ve often been rejected. But through my work, I finally began to feel respected.
In 2023, I was renting a room and working part-time. When my landlord gave me short notice to leave, I was back to square one. My income couldn’t cover other rents. I finally found a small room with just a mattress. It was manageable in summer, but winter made me ill. I was hospitalised, and after trying to continue working, I had to stop and I lost my job.
No job meant I couldn’t pay rent and I ended up sleeping rough, often on buses for safety. I’ve been attacked many times. I believe my autism makes me a target. Eventually, I remembered the charity that helped me before. They welcomed me back and referred me to the Harbour Project at Your Place.
I was nervous about moving again, but I didn’t need to be. From the moment I walked in the door at Your Place, I’ve only experienced kindness. Michelle told me, “This is your home. You are not alone.” Now I realise that this is the family I had always hoped for. The people that have your back no matter what, and want you to achieve your dreams as much as you do.
I finally feel like I belong. I’m rebuilding my health, exploring my love for gardening and photography. Now I feel hope. Now I’m strong. And I have Your Place to thank for it.
