Charlotte’s story

Charlotte was just 19 when she became homeless. The landlord of the home she shared with her mum needed the property back at short notice, leaving them with little time to find another place to live.

“My mum moved in with my aunt and her family, but there wasn’t enough space for both of us. I ended up staying with a friend’s family for about a year while I finished sixth form. When I had to leave, I didn’t know where I would go.

When I got a room at Your Place, I was overwhelmed.  I remember walking in and thinking, ‘Wow, this place is big.’ It felt like university accommodation – there were so many people and what felt like ‘real adults’ everywhere.

It didn’t take long for it to feel like home, and I loved having my own cosy space. I tend to keep to myself, so it took me a little while to feel fully settled and comfortable using the shared spaces, especially the kitchen.

I’m a good cook, and once people started asking what I was making, it became a nice way to chat and get to know others. I also started attending residents’ meetings, which helped me feel involved and gave me a chance to meet people and have a say in shaping the services.

I had some really nice neighbours, and my keyworker was amazing. They made sure I never felt alone, and it was such a comfort knowing that support was always there and that someone always had my back.

Just before Christmas, Your Place offered me the opportunity to move into a property. I’d been at Your Place for a long time, and because affordable housing is so hard to find when you’re under 25, so I jumped at the chance. I was so excited!

The team helped me with things like setting up bills, and making sure I knew who to contact if there were any issues with the property. They also reminded me that the support doesn’t stop just because I’ve moved out – they’ll still be here when I need them.

"When I walked through the front door of my new home for the first time, my jaw dropped. I actually fell to my knees! I was hugging all the staff who helped me move, telling them how grateful I was, and thanking God. It was such an emotional moment for me. Now that I’m here, I feel like I’m really starting my life. I’m 24 and looking forward to growing into myself, having friends over, cooking, and creating a proper home. I’m honestly so, so happy."

I’m sharing the flat with another woman from Your Place, and it’s really nice having a familiar face and living with someone who understands what I’ve been through.

I’m hoping to build up some savings, and my dream is to start my own skincare business one day. Having the continued support from Your Place will make such a difference and will bring me closer to seeing that dream come true.”
