REVEALING THE STORIES BEHIND THE STATISTICS THIS WORLD HOMELESS DAY
World Homeless Day is an internationally recognised day to raise awareness of the global issue of homelessness and the work to help those affected by it, and to call for an end to homelessness once and for all.
Caritas Anchor House is hosting the reception on 8th October 2019, to draw attention to homeless people’s needs, and provide opportunities for the community to get in involved to make a difference. They will shed light on this global crisis at a local level and showcase the people and the stories behind the statistics.
Homelessness is on the rise across the country, and nowhere more so than in the London Borough of Newham, where the charity is based. There, a staggering 1 in every 24 people are homeless – the highest in the country.
The reception will hear from Dame Louise Casey DBE CB, Board Chair for the Institute of Global Homelessness, who has spent her career championing the rights of people experiencing social problems including homelessness and poverty.
Chief Executive, Amanda Dubarry, will share how Caritas Anchor House is working with those without a home and helping them to get back on their feet, and a former resident of the charity will share their personal journey from homelessness to having a home and a job supporting those without one.
Caritas Anchor House provides a home and tailored holistic support to over 200 homeless people each year. By offering opportunities for education, guidance and personal rehabilitation, residents can rebuild their lives and move on to a positive and fulfilling future. In the year to March 2019, the charity provided a home and support to 202 homeless people, helped 48 people into independent living and 45 into employment.
“Homelessness is still on the rise around the country, and so sadly, the demand on charities such as Caritas Anchor House is ever-increasing,” said Amanda Dubarry, Chief Executive of Caritas Anchor House.
“In holding our World Homeless Day reception, we hope to draw attention to the needs of people who do not have a place to call home, and encourage us all to work together and help put an end to homelessness.”
