Spring Budget fails to address UK’s homelessness emergency

On the 6th March 2024, the Chancellor announced the Spring Budget. Amanda Dubarry, CEO of Your Place, responds.

“Just days after the government’s own report on the significant increase in people rough sleeping and living in temporary accommodation, it is deeply disappointing that the Chancellor’s Spring Budget fails to adequately address the UK’s homelessness emergency.

“The government’s commitment to ending rough sleeping by the end of this Parliament isn’t working. Figures released last week showed that rough sleeping has increased in every single region in the UK in the last year – representing an increase nationally of 27%. In London alone, it increased by 32%.

“The budget ignores people who have or are at risk of losing their homes, and the services – like Your Place – that exist to support them. Investing in homelessness prevention and support services would create long-term benefits for both individuals and communities, and is essential to create sustainable solutions.

“It is time for bold and meaningful investments to ensure that everyone has access to safe and stable housing, and to help people to move on from homelessness for good.”
