HOMELESS SUNDAY 2018

Homeless Sunday takes place on 7th October 2018. It is an annual event which provides an opportunity for churches to demonstrate their solidarity with people experiencing homelessness, and to respond to Pope Francis’ calls for society to focus on the needs of the poorest and most marginalised.

On Sunday 7th October 2018, we’re asking parishes to come together to mark Homeless Sunday and demonstrate their solidarity with those experiencing homelessness.

Homelessness is a huge problem in our communities and continues to rise at an alarming rate. Right now, an estimated 1 in 200 people in England do not have a place to call home.

Pope Francis once said, “The Son of God came into this world as a homeless person, and knew what it was not have a roof over his head. We know that Jesus wanted to show solidarity with every person. He tells us this clearly: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt 25:35).

Homeless Sunday aims to raise awareness of this growing issue, and has been organised by Housing Justice and Scottish Churches Housing Action to encourage people to both challenge the conditions that lead to homelessness and celebrate the work of organisations who tackle this problem throughout the year – organisations like Caritas Anchor House.

Caritas Anchor House is a Catholic homeless charity based in the London Borough of Newham, where 1 in 25 people are homeless – the highest in the country. For those who come to us for help, we are more than just a roof over their heads – our support gives people the chance of a better life.

If you think your parish or another community group can help us by holding a collection or by fundraising for Caritas Anchor House this Homeless Sunday, please do let us know by emailing community@caritasanchorhouse.org.uk or calling us on 0207 476 6062.

By doing so you can support members of your community in their journey from homelessness to independent living. Each donation we receive, great or small, can make a difference to someone’s life and is truly appreciated.
