RAMADAN MUBARAK!
On the evening of 15th May, the holy month of Ramadan began, a season of prayer, discipline and generosity celebrated by Muslims across the world.
During this month those of Muslim faith will fast between sunrise and sunset. This is one of the Five Pillars of Islam – obligations which weaves a person’s beliefs into their everyday activities.
Your Place is multi-faith organisation, welcoming individuals from all religious backgrounds and none. In order to assist residents Suhoor and Iftar, the meals eaten before sunrise and after sunset, we have extended the hours in which we serve breakfast and dinner, and set aside space for communal prayer and eating together. Furthermore, each evening we are providing dates, fruit and water for those breaking their fast.
This year, we have also worked with our partners at the Minhaj-Ul-Quran and Cultural Centre London in Forest Gate, and featured on their community radio programme on Ramadan FM.
“We were delighted to get involved with this wonderful community information sharing initiative. The timing was also ideal to target those who tune in during the month of Ramadan to share wellbeing advice, particularly focusing on the aspect of health and fasting and any medical implications,” said Tallat Bhatti, Your Space Programme Coordinator.
We’d like to thank Minhaj-Ul-Quran for inviting Tallat, alongside two residents of Your Place, a Your Space member and our Programme Manager, to talk to listeners of the Ramadan community radio on Monday 21st May. Not only were we able to share with the community the wellbeing services we provide from the Minhaj-Ul-Quran and Your Place, but residents were also able to talk openly about their journeys away from homelessness.
Ramadan Mubarak – Ramadan’s Blessings to you!
